Tobyn Jacobs Parent

Tobyn Jacobs comes from a family of creative talent. His father, Jim Jacobs, is the Tony award-winning writer and creator of the hit Broadway musical Grease. Jim Jacobs was born in 1946 in Chicago, Illinois. He grew up in a working-class family and discovered a love of theater at a young age. Jim attended Northwestern University, where he studied theater and acting. After graduating in 1968, Jim moved to New York City to pursue his dreams of becoming an actor and playwright.

Tobyn’s mother, Cindy Jacobs (née Kobayashi), grew up in New York City. From an early age, Cindy pursued her passion for opera singing. She attended the prestigious Juilliard School, where she studied voice and opera performance. After graduating in 1975, Cindy performed with opera companies across the U.S. and Europe, including the San Francisco Opera, Houston Grand Opera, and Opéra de Monte-Carlo. Her lyric soprano voice was praised by critics for its warmth, clarity and impressive range.

In 2001, Cindy took a break from her opera career after marrying Jim Jacobs and giving birth to their first child, Tobyn. Cindy focused on raising Tobyn and his two younger siblings, though she continued to perform and teach private voice lessons. Cindy passed on her love of music and performing to her children. She and Jim encouraged Tobyn’s creativity from an early age, supporting his interests in drawing, crafting, and video production.

Tobyn credits his parents as the inspiration for his popular YouTube channel, where he shares origami tutorials, craft projects, and stories about growing up with artist parents.

Jim and Cindy provided a nurturing environment for Tobyn and his siblings to explore their talents and passions. Weekends were filled with visits to museums, Broadway shows, and backstage tours.
